IEEE PES Lecture: Grid-Forming Inverters and BESS: EMT Modeling, Control Strategies, and Application in Modern Power Systems
This session will cover the modeling and control of inverter-based resources (IBRs), with a focus on grid-forming inverters and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Using EMT simulation results from PSCAD/EMTDC, the talk will explore dynamic performance, stability considerations, and control strategies. Special emphasis will be placed on the application of these technologies in large-scale facilities such as data centers, where fast transient response and voltage control are critical. The talk will also share insights from practical EMT studies and special investigations in real-world utility and industrial environments.
About the Speaker:
Abolfazl Babaei received his PhD in power system studies from the University of Manitoba. He is a senior member of IEEE and currently serves as a principal engineer at RMS Energy, where he focuses on interconnection studies, IBR integration, and transient analysis. He also teaches at the University of Manitoba and the International College of Manitoba, with over five years of experience as a power systems educator. Over the past seven years, He has worked in Canada on a wide range of power system studies, including detailed EMT simulations, inverter-based resource modeling, and specialized technical investigations for utilities and developers.
