Next-Generation Hybrid Li-Fi/Wi-Fi Networks for Beyond 6G
As the demand for high-speed indoor wireless communication intensifies, traditional Wi-Fi networks face growing limitations in delivering the required performance. Light-Fidelity (Li-Fi) has emerged as a complementary technology, offering high data rates, enhanced security, and efficient use of the visible light spectrum. However, Li-Fi’s limited coverage constrains its standalone effectiveness. To address this, Hybrid Li-Fi/Wi-Fi Networks (HLWN) integrate both technologies, combining the broad coverage of Wi-Fi with the high-speed potential of Li-Fi. Link Aggregation (LA) further enhances this hybrid approach by enabling simultaneous use of both links to improve overall throughput. This work investigates key challenges in HLWN systems, including: (i) handling high user density with diverse latency and throughput requirements; (ii) joint resource allocation under LA to maximize system performance; and (iii) minimizing channel state information overhead in Wi-Fi components. Further, we prototype a hybrid Li-Fi/Wi-Fi network testbed to demonstrate its ability to deliver high data rates, improved coverage, and low handover latency in various indoor scenarios. This research highlights the potential of HLWN as a next-generation solution for beyond-6G connectivity.
