We are pleased to invite you to a celebration of a landmark achievement in electrical engineering. The IEEE Germany Section, in collaboration with the IEEE Poland Section, will unveil an IEEE Milestone plaque in Frankfurt am Main, honoring the first successful long-distance transmission of three-phase electric power in 1891—a pioneering feat that laid the groundwork for today’s electrical power and transmission systems.

On August 25, 1891, at the International Electrotechnical Exhibition in Frankfurt, electrical energy was transmitted for the first time over a distance of 176 km from the hydroelectric power plant in Lauffen am Neckar. Led by engineer Michael Dolivo-Dobrowolski (AEG) and exhibition director Oskar von Miller, this groundbreaking achievement involved the development of special generators and transformers. The transmission—at voltages of up to 25,000 volts with minimal losses—revolutionized global power distribution.

IEEE will formally recognize this achievement with the unveiling of a Milestone plaque at the historical site of the 1891 exhibition on Gallusanlage in Frankfurt. The ceremony is being held in close cooperation with the IEEE Poland Section, whose representatives will be present to highlight the cross-border nature of this technical breakthrough. IEEE President Kathleen Kramer will also attend the following celebration:
