Title: Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and their challenges to the power grid

Overview:

Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) have introduced significant challenges to the distribution system, including complexities in maintaining grid reliability and stability, ensuring reliable interconnections, and managing power quality. This presentation will address these multifaceted challenges associated with DER implementation on the distribution system, including protection and control challenges with the implementation of large-scale electric vehicle DC charging stations, effective grounding on microgrids with inverter-based DERs, transformer inrush current during energization using inverter-based DERs, and new approach to the design of grounding transformer for microgrids with inverter-based DERs. Additionally, this presentation will cover some aspects of operation of distribution DERs during transmission faults and challenges with utilization of existing sensors and power quality meters for DER monitoring in the presence of Silicon-Carbide (SiC) based power electronic devices. This holistic approach aims to provide a thorough understanding of some of the technical and operational aspects of integration of DERs into modern power systems.
