A BCC solid phase for sodium cluster composed by 309 atoms
We propose a BCC solid phase that could be adopted for an assembly of sodium clusters composed of 309 atoms. This is the structure resulting from adding one atom to the surface of a closed-layer cluster with BCC structure composed of 308 atoms. The cluster in each configuration associated with this solid phase is bonded with an energy ∼3.6 meV/atom lower than that acquired in its more stable (icosahedral) structure. In addition, it vibrates with frequencies lower than those with which it vibrates in its icosahedral structure. These are low enough for the assembly to acquire the BCC phase before melting. From a theoretical perspective with the harmonic approach we determine the thermodynamic properties of the assembly below its melting point. We find that it does indeed manifest a solid-solid phase transition. Our estimates of its properties: latent heat, entropy change and temperature are consistent with the available experimental data. It is therefore highly probable that the bcc phase presented here is the one previously detected by experiment. We conclude that the BCC phase has its origin in two properties of the cluster: 1) its sufficiently large size, and 2) its quasi-closed-layer structure.
